Commemorating World Environment Day with an Online Special Lecture:
On 5th June 2020, the Environmental Development Committee organized an online special
lecture on “Environment and Climate Concerns: Rethinking Education Strategies” to mark the occasion of World Environment Day. It was a privilege for the Committee to have as the speaker Dr. Duke Ghosh, Partner, Global Change Research. He was the Fellow of The Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders’ Fellowship Fund (SYLFF) and also a former WOTRO-NOW Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Global Change Programme, Jadavpur University. He has also been a research Fellow of the Science and Policy Research Institute (SPRU) of the University of Sussex and is currently the Partner and Researcher at Global Change Research, Kolkata. An Economist by training, Dr. Ghosh has a rich experience of providing research and consulting services to the government and institutions like the Government of India, various State Governments, ADB, UNIDO, UNDP, DFID, SIDA, CII, Price Water House, and Coopers, Ernst & Young, OxfordPolicy Management, etc. Dr. Ghosh has completed his Ph. D. research in Economics at Jadavpur University as a SYLFF (The Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders’ Fellowship Fund)Fellow and holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) from the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta.
50 Teachers of the college from all the departments as well as 12 students of the Nature Club attended the talk.
Dr. Ghosh elaborated on the various impacts of climate change especially concentrating on the economy of the world. He advised on a multi-disciplinary approach to understand and solve various environmental issues focussing on how individuals could develop themselves and be aware of the problems of the world we all are a part of. He also advised as to what we, as parents and teachers, could do to improve life on the planet and come up with strategies and solutions to combat climatic concerns.
The lecture was highly informative and engrossing and kept all listeners engaged till the very end. The lecture was followed by a question-answer session. Questions were asked by the students and faculties as well. The interest of the students was apparent from the questions that kept flowing from them. The program was a great success since it was appreciated by the students and the faculties alike.
