The Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC) witnessed some spirited rallies around the net as it played out its annual intra-college badminton tournament.
The popularity of the game can be gauged from the fact that as many as 148 students participated in the event as players. As is de rigueur in the BESC, ass arrangements – from the drawing of the fixtures to the management of the backend logistics and the actual conduct of the games were organised by student volunteers, which had an even number of students honing their managerial skills. And as usual there were the ones who made up the crowd, enthusiastically rooting for their friends, adding just that competitive edge that makes competitions like these reach the desired levels.
The participants were arranged in segments with eighteen girls fighting it out for the Girl’s trophy, while in the Boy’s section there were forty-two candidates. Similarly, eight teams of girls were ranged against each other for the Girl’s doubles whereas thirty-two teams competed for the boy’s doubles crown.
Over the week, some very fine performances both individual and team were witnessed by an equally appreciative crowd as the players achieved peak performance levels in an atmosphere of intense competition. That the games were played out in true spirit of sportsmanship was a tribute as much to the players as it was to the fairness of the referees and the managerial capabilities of the organisers. Mention must also be made of the spirited yet stoic participation of the spectators who were, according to Prof Dilip Shah, the Dean of Student Affairs of the BESC, “the real winners”.
Saloni Bagla edged past Divya Banthia to lift the BESC Champion’s Trophy for Girls. Hardik Mohta, in a nail-biting rollercoaster emerged the better of Nishit in the Boy’s Section. Milan took the bronze.
In the doubles section Hardik Mohta and Subhajit Kundu were simply too good for the opposition making it effortlessly to the finals. In the final match that was played out, the challengers Piyush Agarwal and Ankush Bhola put up a fierce resistance but ultimately succumbed as the Hardik-Subhojit team lifted the trophy. Ishika Khaitan and Rishabh Ghoshal took the bronze.
