Calcutta resembling the Indian Legacy of being self made, is an apt place to find yourself in various indigenous industries, one such being the GANGES Manufacturing Pvt. Ltd. We, the students of COMMERECE PLUS had the privilege to visit this place on Saturday 8th Aug 2015. A group of 45 students were accompanied by Prof. Vijay Kothari and Prof. Rajesh Kumar Shaw. The journey began with an approx. three hours bus ride @ 8.30 am.
On arrival we were warmly welcomed by Mr. Rakesh Jhajharia. After having breakfast, we were briefed about the jute products manufacturing process and then taken to the factory shopfloor by Mr. Patra. It was a practical learning experience where we saw various processes like jute fibre cleaning, drawings to convert it into thin threads, weaving, cutting and finally packaging and dispatching. Having spent about an hour’s time on the floor, we were back to the bunglow where an interactive session with the Mr. Behra, chief quality controller, was arranged.
The session with Mr. Behra was highly enriching and students were made aware about the history and present condition of the jute industry. We also discussed about various Govt. policies and future trend of the industry. Mr. Behra informed that the total annual turnover of jute industry is about Rs 8000 cr. out of which Rs. 1000 cr. is export and Rs. 6500 cr. is accounted for jute bags used for packaging and distribution .
This was followed by Lunch and after thanking everyone for the hospitality, we started our journey back to the college.
