“Remedial education (also known as developmental education, basic skills education, compensatory education, preparatory education, and academic upgrading) is assigned to assist students in order to achieve expected competencies in core academic skills such as literacy and numeracy”.
The entire system of college education has been misappropriated by an overwhelming stress on private tuitions and things have reached such a menacing proportion that many students believe that without enrolling themselves in one of the various “tuitions” they are doomed to fail.
Aimed only at ensuring the achievement of results, these tuition classes have spawned into a virtually parallel industry and often blur the very limits of ethicality.
The biggest casualty of this sordid state of things, off course, is education itself, with students who fly through them acquiring degrees but are none the wiser.
At Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC), it has been a conscious effort to free the process of education from this all-encompassing cancer, that if unchecked, promises to attack the very foundations of knowledge and its dissemination.
“Any BESC student who attends the classes regularly is capable of doing reasonably well in the University Examinations” said Prof Dilip Shah, the Dean of Student Affairs of BESC.
“In case a student has any particular problem relating to any of the subjects, he or she can approach the concerned subject teacher in the Library who are available on a regular basis only to address such specific subject matters”.
“If students feel that they need further support, we have the Remedial Classes – where the entire syllabus is run through again, that too with an examination orientation” said Prof Shah.
The idea is simple – to provide every kind of academic support to the students of BESC so as to encourage them to understand their subjects at the same time discouraging them from joining the swelling ranks of students seeking private tuitions.
“We want to destroy the myth that has been created by vested interests and explain to the students the fact that such
examination-oriented studies are actually injurious to their long-term growth, apart from creating an unnecessary financial burden on their guardians.”
The BESC Remedial Classes covering the key subjects are spread over a period with regular class-room sessions that are held in the morning to accommodate as many willing students as possible.
The classes are open to all bona fide students of the college, with members of the faculty taking special care to ensure that the students who attend the classes are provided with every possible assistance to ensure a successful passage.
The college charges a token amount for these classes and for all intents and purposes, they are Free.
The efficacy of the Remedial Classes can be gauged from the fact that since their inception, registration has increased steadily.
“In the current session we have the maximum number of students who have enrolled for the remedial classes and we are extremely encouraged by the response from the community for whose benefit such classes are being conducted”.
There is also a direct co-relation between students scoring above average marks and the attendance in remedial classes.
The latest university results that have come in have been extremely encouraging for the college.
Needless to say, a good percent of those securing first class had taken the remedial classes.
