The Students’ Activities Committee (Afternoon and Section) of the Department of Commerce (Afternoon and Evening Section) organized a Two-Day Workshop on the Basics of Research on May 2nd and 3rd, 2023. The workshop aimed to provide participants with fundamental knowledge and practical skills in the field of research. The workshop was divided into two days, each held at different venues and times. Day 1 took place at the Society Hall, starting at 5:30 p.m., while Day 2 was conducted in Room Nos. 440 & 442, starting at 2:30 p.m.
On Day 1, the workshop began with the emcee, Ms. Ashrity Shaw, setting the stage for the sessions ahead. The event began with a welcome address delivered by Dr. Subhabrata Ganguly, the Teacher-in-Charge of The BESC, who extended a warm welcome to all participants and emphasized the importance of research in this world.
The resource persons for Day 1 included distinguished faculty members from the Department of Commerce (Afternoon and Evening Section). Dr. Joyeta Bhadury enlightened the participants about the basics of research, different types of research, types of data, and the distinction between data and information. Mr. Sayan Roy delved into the intricacies of research design and guided the attendees on how to define study objectives effectively. Dr. Dyuti Sinha shed light on the importance of literature review and the issue of plagiarism in research. Lastly, Ms. Gargi Das elucidated the nuances of referencing, an essential aspect of academic writing.
On Day 2, the workshop continued with an engaging lineup of resource persons. Ms. Shawni Dutta and Ms. Priyanka Banerjee from the Department of Computer Science provided a detailed hands-on experience with MS Word, showcasing its utility in research documentation and formatting. Dr. Meghdoot Ghosh, the esteemed Principal of Swami Vivekananda Institute of Modern Science, and Mr. Souvik Chakraborty, a faculty member from the Department of Commerce (Afternoon and Evening Section), facilitated a practical session on data analysis using Excel. They covered topics such as descriptive statistics, data visualization, data partitioning, and linear regression.
The workshop received an overwhelming response from the student community, with 81 participants attending on Day 1 and 79 participants on Day 2. The presence of 22 faculty members added valuable insights and expertise to the workshop sessions.
At the end of Day 2, the workshop concluded with a valedictory session conducted by emcee Ms. Ria Saha. She expressed gratitude to all the resource persons for their valuable contributions and presented them with gifts and certificates as tokens of appreciation. Ms. Sukanya Chatterjee delivered the vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to the organizing committee, participants, and everyone involved in making the workshop a success. The Two-Day Workshop on the Basics of Research provided a platform for students to enhance their research skills and foster a deeper understanding of the research process.
