On August 25th, 2023, the Department of Commerce (Morning) along with BEST (Bhawanipur Entrepreneurship and Startup Training) collective, organized a visit to the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta. The students left the campus around 8.45 a.m. by bus with 102 students of the B.Com & BBA department, accompanied by the faculty in charge, Mr. Chandan Jha, Mrs. Shilpa Sharma, and Ms. Sakshi Shaw. On arrival at the IIM Calcutta campus around 10am, they were directed toward the Auditorium for the event ‘Shaping Young Mind’ which featured a lineup of esteemed speakers who aimed to provide valuable insights and guidance on nurturing and developing the potential of young minds, addressing various aspects including their personal growth, values, innovation, and mental well-being.
The first speaker Mr. Shrinivas V Dempo, President AIMA and Chairman, Dempo Group of Companies, spoke passionately about the importance of ethical values in shaping young minds. He shared anecdotes and emphasized the need to imbibe values such as integrity, empathy, and social responsibility. Dempo’s talk resonated with the audience and highlighted the role of failure in guiding one’s personal and professional journey.
Mr. Shiv Shivakumar, Operating Partner, Advent International Private Equity, a Corporate Celebrity addressed the audience on fostering innovation and adaptability. He stressed the importance of curiosity and a willingness to embrace change. Drawing from his experience, he illustrated how innovation can lead to positive transformations in various spheres. His talk encouraged the audience to approach challenges with creativity and open-mindedness.
Ms. Vinita Bali, Former Managing Director & CEO, Britannia India Ltd, addressed the audience with a focus on cultivating a growth mindset. She emphasized the significance of embracing challenges, continuous learning, and adaptability. Bali highlighted the role of mentors and the importance of seeking learning opportunities in every situation. Her speech encouraged the audience to view setbacks as stepping stones to success. One of her lines that really inspired all present was “When you are 30,000 ft up you see horizons and not boundaries.”
Dr. Randeep Guleria, Chairman of the Institute of Internal Medicine & Respiratory and Sleep Medicine and Director, Medical Education, Medanta, focused on the critical aspect of mental health and well-being in shaping young minds. He discussed the challenges faced by young individuals in today’s fast-paced world and emphasized the need for a supportive environment. Guleria highlighted the role of communication, awareness, and empathy in promoting mental wellness.
The other speaker for the day was Mr. Aditya Ghosh, Business Leader & Co-Founder of Akasa Air, & former President & Whole Time Director, Indigo. The speakers collectively addressed crucial dimensions such as a growth mindset, ethical values, personalized education, innovation, and mental well-being. Their speeches resonated with the audience, inspiring them to play an active role in shaping the future generation.
Through their insightful addresses, the speakers offered practical strategies, real-life examples, and expert perspectives.
