The students of AON (Assembly of Nations) organized a MUN workshop, “Learn to MUN” for two days in the Society Hall from 12 noon to 2 pm. The workshop was conducted by the secretary general of The BESC AON’23, Hreed Gupta who is currently a second-year student of Economics hons from Bhawanipur Education Society College. He has been a part of the Kolkata MUN circuit since 2018 and has also been a delegate and EB in 30+ MUNs, combined. The first day of the workshop commenced with an overwhelming speech delivered by Prof. Dilip Shah on the importance of holding such discussions and how students can benefit from them.
The speaker Hreed Gupta addressed the important points and gave a brief introduction about MUN. Everyone attending the workshop had a general idea about the UN as they know it and were made aware of the importance and working of the United Nations. He also discussed the League of Nations and how it failed to achieve its purpose. It was an interactive discussion where the attendants were free to question the speaker and put forward their points of view.
A presentation was shown that demonstrated the importance and working of the different organs of the UN. He expounded on the various working bodies of the UN. Each organ of the UN was discussed in detail and attendants were made well-acquainted with the functioning of each organ. Further, he explained the difference between the working of the Indian committee and the UN committees. Harsh Sharma, an experienced delegate of the Indian committee explained the significance and functioning of the Indian committees. He also discussed the search process required to be followed for competing in Indian committees. The attendants raised their questions and clarified their doubts. The first day of the workshop was a great success and everyone enjoyed attending it.
On the second day of the workshop, our guest speaker Shubh Singh, who is a film student from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata came to conduct the workshop. From being afraid of public speaking to pursuing it actively at various levels for over a decade, he currently has experience participating, winning, and chairing more than 60 national and international conferences. He spoke about his experience of being in the MUN circuit for eight years. He explained to everyone the importance of participating in Muns as it helps one to boost confidence and interact with people. He discussed the research process required to be followed before going for a MUN.
He said that first, we need to search about the committee, then the agenda, and lastly focus on the allotted country. Hreed Gupta and Shubh Singh extensively talked about the ROPs and how it works in an ongoing MUN. At last, the queries of the attendants were addressed, and they were encouraged to participate in the upcoming AON to be held in April. The participants learned a lot and had insightful experiences.
