The two day Self-Defence workshop for Girls was conducted on 20th-21st of August 2015. It helped the Girls to become aware, prepared, and ready for any situation that may occur in your everyday life on any given day. The workshop held session on Safety Discussion and Physical Techniques.
The main trainers conducting the event were Shihan Shivaji Ganguly, Sensei Shibayan Ganguly (Secretary) and Shyamantak Ganguly (Chief Instructor).
Day 1 was an introductory day where the trainers presented a small clip on why and how they should be self sufficient. Most of the girls in the crowd voted for a YES when asked if they have ever felt unsafe while commuting alone which apparently implied the fact that it was sheer cynicism that had made them turn up for this two hour long event which would change their rather dim outlook on self defence. After a quick sparring warm up session, the ladies were told about some vital changes that they needed to make about their personality to make them less vulnerable to such attacks which include walking down a busy street looking lost or walking whilst looking at their phones, a common practice each of us do on a regular basis. The most important point mentioned during the workshop was, if an individual is caught in a trouble the first and foremost priority should be TO ESCAPE, even if it costs her valuable possessions like mobiles and jewellery; as nothing is more valuable than your own safety. A few basic kicks and punches were taught to the girls which will definitely help them fight back against the rogue. Day 1 was concluded with another clip showing the journey of Sensei Shibayan Ganguly to the zenith of success.
Day 2 started off with another sparring warm up session and after a brief practice of the kicks and punches, girls were given gloves and shields to apply the tricks on the trainers and flaunt off their newly learned moves. The next half comprised tutorials on how to use props like umbrella, pen, lipstick and heels to knock down the eve teaser. It was a fun filled session because no one knew that these must haves in a lady’s bag can turnout to be weapons to combat an assault. After the two hour session, which turned out to be more informative and useful than expected, the trainer was quite pragmatic about the fact that once you’re in a situation of crisis and all your senses go numb, no magical moves will work except for arming yourself with whatever you have is the best hope to self defence. The girls seemed to be confident about the workshop and concluded it with a “khia” sound in unison which supposedly denoted power and confidence in Japanese dialect .
The participating girls left the session feeling empowered and more confident. Importance of being in control of your personal safety, Don’t be a Victim.
