The monotonous career stigma of pursuing common professional courses like CA and MBA has set a black veil over equally lucrative career paths. To make aware to the future entrepreneurs the less chosen pursuits, The Bhawanipur Education Society College organized an Alternative Career Counseling Seminar. The event commenced with an inspiring speech by the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Dilip Shah. He slowly paved his speech towards the prospects of an initiative our college has under taken or rather, a unique diploma course called Commerce+ Course. The members of the Governing Body of our college were asked to inaugurate Commerce+ Course with the unveiling of a booklet followed by a short video for the same. Also the faculties present for the seminar were introduced by Prof.Shah and thus, the original agenda of the event was set into motion.
Career Counseling is a process that will help you to know and understand yourself and the world of work in order to make educational, career and life decisions. It was an honor for the BES college students to get guidance from the experts regarding modern day emerging careers. The seminar conducted by the college had invited professionals from various walks of life.
A good career coach learns to change his/her orientation in order to respond to the specific needs of the clients at different stages of the career coaching. He is an Assessor, Information Provider, Referral Agent, Guide, and Tutor. Just like Mr. G. Jai Shankar a renowned career counselor quotes that, “If you enjoy the difficulties that’s your job. If you hate the difficulties get out”. His main focus was to make students aware of the future possibilities and how to grab them.
Mr. Pramod Maloo a digital engineer thinks that the present generation is attracted to easy money, which he thinks is possible through Digital Marketing. There’s no denying it, the world is rapidly shifting from analogue to digital. People are consuming more and more digital content on a daily basis and companies that have not yet recognized this in their marketing strategies need to adapt fast. The good news is that digital offers just as much potential to marketers as it does to consumers. He even offered the students internship so that they can work and understand in depth how the digital market works.
Mrs. Roshan Devdasan, a renowned face in the field of Psychometric Profiling Test, equipped the students with virtue of this test which include a wide array of evaluation tools that measure one’s knowledge, abilities and personality. An ability testing unit which includes a range of psychometric aptitude tests – verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, abstract reasoning, and other non verbal reasoning tests. The tests are helpful at analyzing the more ‘hidden’ traits of an individual. Formal education and past experience will not always provide a clear, up-to-date assessment of these personal skills. Aptitude tests, for example, could help to provide a better, more realistic and current view of a candidates’ abilities than a formal certificate of education. The different example illustrated by her helped the students to get the idea clearly.
Mr.Dipanjan Mukherjee explained the students the concept and benefits of Certified Financial Planner. CFP is a course which covers a wide knowledge in the field of Tax, Insurance and many more. Also details with regard to enrollment, certification, benefits were informed to the students.
Mr. Mohit Damania a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) and a CFA advisor along with an experienced FRM (Financial Risk Manager) puts light on how CFA is gaining the attention of youth in India. CFA is what gives us a deeper knowledge in Investment. CFA is not a replacement for MBA; rather both go hand-in-hands. He then explained the students about the FRM which is a US based course, to be awarded the FRM designation, candidates must complete rigorous two-part, practice-oriented examination that covers the major topics in financial risk management, demonstrate two years’ professional work experience in financial risk management, and meet other requirements.
Mr. Rahul begin an expert in the field of Insurance enlightened the students about the benefits of building their career in this diverse field. Insurance is one of the biggest sectors in Indian economy. By collecting a premium income of Rs. 340,000 crore in 2011-12, it contributed to 4.10 percent of the nation’s GDP. The sector employs more than 2 lakh people as officers and operational cadre. Aspirants can look for positions in marketing, actuarial, underwriting, operations, distribution and in investment department in an insurance company. The entry-level jobs are Management Trainee, Executive Trainee, Business Analysts, Actuarial Analyst, Insurance Analyst, etc. The pay packages in these jobs can be anywhere between Rs 2 Lakh to Rs 5 Lakh depending on the recruiting company.
Mr. Prakash Nahata, being an expert in a new field of study called CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) enlightens students on CIMA being one of the professional associations for accountants in Ireland and the UK. Its particular emphasis is on developing the management accounting profession worldwide. CIMA is the largest management accounting body in the world, with more than 203,000 members and students in 173 countries. CIMA is also a member of the International Federation of Accountants. Thus, creating a buzz amongst the students.
Mr. Jaishankar, Capacity Building Trainer, an expert in the field of diverse career and knowing more than 500 career options for students. He spoke on public services and politics as a career option. According to him life was termed as “pomp pomp life” which means a cheerful life. The students were told how they should prepare for the examinations and different aspects of this field were discussed by him.
The session ended with the speech from Prof Dilip Shah, he summed up the entire session and then left the session open for the students to interact with the speakers.
The seminar was a great success and also an eye opener for most of the students. A One to one interaction took place which helped the students to clear their doubts and get a deeper understanding of their chosen field.
